Based in the village of Shotts in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, The House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band has been 15 times the winner of the RSPBA World Pipe Band Championships and is proud to have The House of Edgar, Scotland’s most prominent tartan manufac-turer, as its official sponsor. | The Shotts & Dykehead Caledionia Pipe Band was formed in 1910 under the leadership of Pipe Major Dugald MacFarlane, under very humble circumstances indeed in that the band practiced in the kitchen of his home. So conscientious were they that, within four years, through hard work and perseverance, they purchased their first uniform in McKenzie tartan and, from then on, entered every competition available, initially without success. From 1929 onwards under Pipe Major Tom McAllister they went from success to success and won the Grade 2 championship in 1935. | | In 2003, the band announced a sponsor-ship deal with The House of Edgar and is now known as The House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band. The band wears a re-make of the McLean of Duart tartan especially commissioned by The House of Edgar. This sponsorship agreement has since been renewed twice, in 2006 and again in 2009. The current agreement ensures sponsorship of the band until 2012. | | Winner of the 2005 World Pipe Band Champion-ship, the band was named “Pipe Band of the Year” in December 2005 at a red carpet Scots Traditional Music Award ceremony held in the Queens Hall, Edinburgh. | | The band’s name is synonymous with pipe band excellency and treated with the greatest respect by all in the piping fraternity throughout the world. They have competed and performed in Canada, USA, Sweden, Germany, France, Belgium and even Russia, all with distinction and pride as ambassadors for Shotts, Scotland and the United Kingdom. The band is classed as one of the finest combinations of pipes and drums in the world. | |
